Understanding How IELTS Testing Works
IELTS is a completely English language proficiency test. It comprises of four modules – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening, Reading and Writing exam is conducted on the same day whereas Speaking test is conducted altogether on a different day either one week prior to the main exam or one week after that. The candidate has to choose from 2 modules – IELTS Academic or IELTS General.
IELTS gives test takers a privilege to choose the mode of taking the exam. There are two options to take IELTS exam, it either can be given through Computer Based Test (CBT) or Pen and Paper based test (PNP). Amongst both the modes, there is a myth of choosing one over the other on the basis of difficulty level. It is solely a student’s choice based on convenience, so that there is no hindrance in presenting the skills one possesses. So, you can opt for what you are comfortable with.
To have a real-time experience of a CBT exam you can log in to ieltscoachingonline.com. It not only gives you how the actual
test paper would look like but gives you access to multiple FREE mock tests along with answers and explanation.
The candidate is marked on a 9 Band scale in every module in IELTS and then the final band score is taken out from the average of all the bands in IELTS . Your performance on the final test day in each of the module in IELTS is marked as a band score on a scale of 1, which is the lowest to 9, which is the highest. The Overall Band Score is the average of the marks of four sections, which is rounded to the nearest whole or half band. The scores per section are weighted equally in the IELTS Exam.
IELTS Academic is for the students who are planning to study abroad whereas IELTS General is for the candidates who are planning to migrate abroad and work there and become permanent residents. For both these modules there are four sections – listening, reading, writing and speaking, unless one has an exemption due to some disability. Listening and Speaking tests are the same for both Academics and General, but there is a difference in the Reading and Writing tests for IELTS Academic and General Training.
